  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Amazoner -- Nothing to learn : One of the most boring books I have ever seen. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2019 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Ken Wood -- Sociology classic : This is a good book for sociology and it’s a classic for theory about every day life. It’s written in the old fashioned professor style that is complex and overly academic. That makes it a lot of work to read. The theory is excellent but the reading is very dry and slow. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from MSM -- Essential for understanding social organizations and social phenomenon at large and at small : I have learned so much from reading any work by Erving Goffman that it is hard to prefer any one of the works over any other. The economy and selection of words, the assembly of sentences, the incessant flow of ideas that bring the thesis home, constantly focusing attention to the multifaceted life of human being as a social being, and the phenomenological approach that he uses, based on actual field studies informed by acute observations -- all work together to make any and all of his works absolutely brilliant. Reading his books, we come to mourn that he died so early. This particular work, on the presentation of the self, is based on his dissertation field work. It embodies many of the essential concepts and threads of ideas which also flower in multiple forms, in specific and special cases, in the body of his later work, too -- in his truly amazing productive life. This is a reading well-worth it for decades to come for anyone interested in social form, impression and expression. No simple words can summarize it. His own conclusion, in this volume, provides a dense summary of the work and provides hints towards further research. ( Reviewed in the United States on June 7, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ariadne011 -- A Classic (Deservedly) : This is a classic that even in the glut of literary theory, social theory, cultural theory, etc., I keep coming back to. Always illuminating, and accepting of the necessary contradictions withou trying to overemphasize, problematize, or judge them. It immediately makes sense, so it would be illuminating to people new to this sort of thing, and then it keeps on making sense, which is the hard part. • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Eva Deane -- Paperback is missing the first 22 pages : Slightly amused that with so many folks having read this, almost none mention the very obvious ( Reviewed in the United States on April 18, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from Daniel McIntosh -- A classic : Decades old, but still fascinating. This is one of the books that convinced me to take social psychology seriously. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 2, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Dennis G. -- A classic : A classic. I gave it to my young friend just starting her journey through sociology! ( Reviewed in the United States on July 31, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from ELN -- Enjoyable sociology must-read! : A must-read for those in sociology (especially micro-sociology). Life is a performance. ( Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2018 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Cosmo lang -- Only buy if you're smarter than me😢 : Prompt and excellent, value on the negative side I now realise I am not smart enough to appreciate the contents in the way it deserves. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 21, 2020 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Patrick May -- Avoid this Kindle Edition : The content of the book itself is excellent and gives much food for thought. Regrettably, this Kindle edition, at a bargain price of £1.39, is riddled with typographical errors. It has obviously been produced using OCR software but unfortunately, does not appear to have been proof read. Whilst it is often possible to work out the original wording, at times, sentences are rendered nonsensical. What a pity! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 8, 2016 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Katerina Drosou -- Really good : with my doctorate on how people change according to occasion and symbolic interactionism. I believe though it can be enjoyed by others with a more general interest. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 30, 2017 )
  • 2.0 out of 5 stars from Amazon Customer -- The book is missing 32 pages from the beginning! : The book appears to be in a good stay, however it has some sort of a print or book binding defect, because it starts from a page 33, mid sentence. That is quite a lot pages missing ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 3, 2017 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from caroline juskus -- Great read : Great book ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 1, 2019 )
